About the Artist
Hello! My name's James Thornton, and I'm an artist and printmaker from Louisville, KY, currently living in Florida.
Some notable achievements:
- Official Artist of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Festival Poster!
- Resident Artist of Oz Galleries in Louisville, KY from 2007-2010.
- Owner of Thornton Art Studio Gallery in Oxmoor Center mall of Louisville from 2010-2013.
Thornton Art Studio is the result of a life-long interest in drawing being combined with creative technology. When I was a kid, I used to get in trouble in school for drawing all the time.
As time went on, I studied more techniques and experimented with different tools. I went from graphite, to Prismacolor pencils, to painting, to working in numerous airbrush shops. It was an airbrush artist who introduced me to digital art. Pen tablets bring art and technology together in a brilliant way. You can draw and paint right on screen with all the finesse and sensitivity of an artist's brushwork. It's a beautiful way to paint - the color source is vibrant, colorful light.
This was important for me because learning digital art and graphic design opened up many new doors. Being able to create production-ready graphics for web and print brought on a whole new world of clients and opportunities. It's also closely tied to printing technology. I use many art applications, but I finish all of my designs in Photoshop, which is the exact application I use to print.
So thank you for visiting the website! To me, this is also a work of art and a work in progress. I hope you enjoy your visit and come back to see how the gallery will evolve into an even greater art experience over time. Cheers!
